HA NOI — The national daily Nhan Dan (The People), after 59 years of politico-ideological operations, deserves to be praised for its role as the Party's standard bearer in the press.

Politburo Member and Permanent Member of the Party Central Committee Secretariat Truong Tan Sang made the remarks at the paper's 59th anniversary in Ha Noi yesterday.

On behalf of State and the Party leaders, Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan presented the title "Hero of the People's Armed Forces" during the anti-US Resistance War to the Nhan Dan newspaper, marking tis contribution to the national construction and defence

Nhan Dan, the voice of the Communist Party and State of Viet Nam, published its first issue on March 11, 1951 in the Resistance Zone of Viet Bac during the anti-French Resistance War.

Since then, generations of staff at the newspaper have excelled at acting as a bridge between the Party and Government and the people while contributing positively to the nation's revolutionary cause, Sang said.

Sang said he hoped that all of the newspaper's staff would continue the paper's glorious tradition, upgrade their skills and comprehensively improve the quality of associated publications to meet new demand.

The Editor-in-Chief of the paper, Dinh The Huynh, said the staff were well aware of the great honour and huge responsibilities that had been placed upon them. Nhan Dan now has a total of six publications.

"The latest publication, Thoi nay, launched in January, was much welcomed by readers," he said.
