HA NOI — A black-and-white photo by Tran Viet Van of two elderly ca tru (ceremonial singing) artists has won first prize in the photo competition Viet Nam's World Heritage.

Van said he spent a great deal of time in all three ca tru clubs in Ha Noi expecting "to catch the ‘soul' of the unique traditional art form".

"I was very emotional when I saw these elderly artisans sitting on a sedge mat performing ca tru."

The winning photo entitled Bau Vat Nhan Van Song (Living Human Treasure) was of Nguyen Thi Sinh, 89, and dan day accompanist Vu Van Hong.

The photo contest was organised by the ministry of culture and the Viet Nam Artistic Photographers Association (VAPA).

The contest, which was launched in January, attracted 2,000 submissions from about 300 photographers.

The winner was awarded VND10-million in prize money.

The runners up were Hoang Hon Lang Biang (Lang Biang Sunset) by Tran Thiet Dung and the Buc Tranh Pho Hoi (Picturesque Hoi An Ancient Town) by Ong Van Sinh. They won VND7 million each.
