HCM City road contractor fined

The HCM City People's Committee has slapped a fine of more than VND200 million (US$10,500) on Construction Corporation No1 (CC1) for multiple violations regulations related to construction and management of technical infrastructure.

CC1, as the main contractor of a road linking Thu Thiem Bridge and the East-West Highway, employed unqualified supervisors and failed to buy construction and consultancy insurance packages, among other violations.

Hai Duong shuts 66 polluting companies

The northern province of Hai Duong has named 66 enterprises for environmental pollution, with 11 of them causing serious pollution.

The provincial People's Committee has suspended the operations of five of them until they install wastewater treatment systems. The other polluters have been given time until the end of this year to build the systems.

Tuition fees waived for poor students

HCM City students from families whose average annual income per person is less than VND10 million (US$526) would be exempt from tuition and other school fees this year, the city Department of Education and Training said.

Students from families with an income of VND10 million-12 million are eligible for a 50 per cent reduction in fees.
