Gia Lai short of classrooms, teachers
Central Highlands Gia Lai province needs another 700 new classrooms despite recently completing construction of 570 new classrooms for the 2010-11 academic year. Thousands of students attend classes at village community houses and conference halls because of the shortage.
The province is also short of 400 kindergarten teachers, according to its Education and Training Department.

Joint venture builds ethanol factory
The BIO Ethanol Thai-Viet joint venture will invest in a factory in Phuoc Nam Industrial Park in central Ninh Thuan Province to produce ethanol from cassava. The US$50 million project has planned capacity of 60 million litres a year when completed in 2012.

Da Nang ranks first in IT index
Central Da Nang City has ranked first for two consecutive years among cities and provinces nationwide in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Index in 2010, according to a report released on Monday by the National Steering Committee on Information Application. HCM City and Ha Noi were placed second and third.
The Ministry of Education and Training which was placed second in 2009 topped the list of ministries in ICT Index this year, followed by the Ministry of Finance.

Pollution threatens Hoi An pagoda
Environmentalists have expressed alarm over the pollution around Chua Cau (Bridge Pagoda), one of the best-known attractions in Hoi An historic town. Many new businesses, hotels and restaurants near the bridge have been releasing 16,000cu.m of untreated wastewater to the Chua Cau canal. The volume of pollutants in the canal significantly exceeds permitted levels, according to Hoi An's Natural Resources and Environment Department.
Tourists have complained about the bad smell from the canal on hot summer days.
