Nam Dinh acute diarrhoea epidemic controlled

Nam Dinh Province has brought under control an acute diarrhoea epidemic, with no new cases reported since the end of last month, the provincial Department of Health has reported. The epidemic first hit the province's Truc Ninh District where 26 cases were recorded.

More than 10,000 fail entrance exams

More than 10,000 students in HCM City failed to qualify for admission to the 10th grade in public schools. The results of the two two-day entrance exams held last month were announced by the city's Department of Education and Training on Friday.

Those who have failed to get into public schools can apply to study at private schools, vocational schools and centres for continuing education, with a total of more than 37,000 enrolments available, said Le Hong Son, deputy director of the department.

Committee for overseas Vietnamese awarded

Ministry of Foreign Affairs last Friday awarded a certificate of merit to the HCM City Committee for Overseas Vietnamese for its outstanding performance over the last few years. The committee has worked with relevant departments and agencies to attract more than 400 overseas Vietnamese specialists and highly educated people to return to their native country between 2004 and 2009 for long-term work.

More than 2,300 projects worth a total of VND31 trillion (US$1.64 billion) were invested in the country by overseas Vietnamese during this period.

Dengue fever hits central region

The central province of Khanh Hoa last Friday announced an outbreak of dengue fever epidemic in the province. At least 2,170 people have contracted the fever since the beginning of this month, the highest rate of infections in the central region, according to the provincial Department of Health.

Lawmakers alarmed by forest destruction

The encroachment and destruction of forests and environmental pollution were issues of highest concern among most delegates at the 18th meeting of Binh Phuoc Province's People's Council held last Friday.

Nearly 470 cases of illegal encroachment and destruction of more than 310ha of forest were reported since the beginning of the year, according to a report by the provincial People's Committee.

Delegates from the province's Chon Thanh District voiced concerns about the environment pollution caused by the Minh Hung-Korea Industrial Park.
